Pumice and Perlite are both volcanic materials used to improve soil aeration and drainage, but they differ in durability and weight. Pumice is a heavier, durable rock that holds more water, making it ideal for long-term, outdoor, or top-heavy plants.

Perlite is a lightweight, cheaper, and fragile material (looks like styrofoam) that excels at rapid drainage but can float to the surface.

Difference between Pumice and Perlite

Pumice
Durability: Lasts for years without breaking down.
Weight: Heavier, won't wash away or float during watering.
Best Use: Succulents, bonsai, and succulents in wet climates.
Pros: Holds water while maintaining oxygen (high porosity).
Cons: More expensive, harder to find.

Perlite
Durability: Fragile, breaks down into dust within 1-2 years.
Weight: Very light; often floats to the surface and is easily transported to a Container Gardening pot.
Best Use: Seed starting, indoor potting mixes, large containers.
Pros: Cheap, easily available, creates maximum, rapid aeration.
Cons: Compacts faster and retains less water than pumice

Verdict: Choose pumice for longevity and better moisture balance. Choose perlite for budget-conscious projects, seed starting, or when lightweight potting mix is required.
